Sample Problem

A salesperson paid $1,400 for 280 shirts. He sold 240 of them at an average of $8 each. If he made a total profit of $800, what was the average price at which he sold each of the remaining shirts?

$ .00

Solution

The total amount of money the 280 shirts sold for: $1,400 + $800 = $2,200

The total amount the 240 shirts sold for: 240 × $8 = $1,920

The total amount the rest of the shirts sold for: $2,200 – $1,920 = $280

The number of shirts left: 280 – 240 = 40 shirts

Therefore, the average price of each of the rest of the shirts: $280 ÷ 40 = $7
