Sample Problem

Round the following decimal to 1 decimal place.

19.03 ≈

Solution

When rounding the decimals to the nearest tenths, to decide whether to round up or stay the same, look at the number to the right of the tenths place.

If the number is 5 or greater, round the tenths place up and drop the digits after the tenths place;

If the number is less than 5, keep the same tenths place and drop the digits after the tenths place.

3 is smaller than 5.

So 19.03 ≈ 19.0.
