Sample Problem

In a swimming team, there are 11 more boys than girls. The number of boys is 72% of the total number of team members. How many members are there at the swimming team?

members

Solution

The percent for girls: 100% – 72% = 28%

The percentage difference: 72% – 28% = 44%

Then, use the formula: Whole = Amount of difference ÷ Percent of difference

The difference in number between boys and girls are 11, the percentage difference between boys and girls are 44%.

Thus, the number of members: 11 ÷ 44% = 25
