Sample Problem

There were 200 teachers in a high school and 30% of them are male teachers. After more male teachers were employed, the percentage of male teachers increased to 44%. How many new male teachers were employed?

new male teachers

Solution

Before the increase,

The number of female teachers was: 200 × (100% – 30%) = 140

After the increase,

The percentage of female teachers: 100% – 44% = 56%

Since the number of female teachers did not change, then use the formula: Whole = Part ÷ Percentage

The total number of teachers after the increase: 140 ÷ 56% = 250

Thus, the number of new male teachers: 250 – 200 = 50
