Sample Problem

There are two sticks of different length,

(a) The ratio of the length of stick B to the length of stick A is : .

(b) The length of stick B is the length of stick A

(c) Stick A is times as long as stick B.

Solution

(a) Stick A is at 9 cm long, and stick B is at 3 cm long. So the ratio is 3:9.

(b) 3:9 and  express the same relationship between the length of stick A and B. Thus  of the length of stick A is the length of stick B.

(c) 9 ÷ 3 = 3, so stick A is 3 times as long as stick B.
