Sample Problem

The ratio of the number of boys to the number of girls in a kindergarten is 5:6. There are 25 boys in the kindergarten.

(a) How many girls are there in the kindergarten?

girls

(b) How many children are there in the kindergarten?

children

Solution

Set the number of boys as 5 units and the number of girls as 6 units. Then, the total number of children is (5 + 6 = 11) units. So,

(a) 5 units = 25

1 unit = 25 ÷ 5 = 5

6 units = 6 × 5 = 30

(b) 11 units = 11 × 5 = 55

Thus, there are 30 girls; and the total number of children is 55.
