Sample Problem

A sailboat started its trip at an average speed of 50 mph at 13:15. If the distance of the trip was 510 miles, at what time did the sailboat reach its destination?

Solution

Recall the formula:  time=distance ÷ speed

The time: 510 ÷ 50 = 10.2 h = 10 h + 0.2 × 60 min = 10 h 12 min

Thus, 13:15 + 10 h 12 min = 23:27
