Sample Problem

Bill ran 2 mph faster than he walked. He walked 2 hours and ran the rest of the time over a distance of 8 miles. If the total distance covered by Bill was 14 miles, what was the amount of time he spent running?

  h

Solution

The distance for walking: 14 - 8 = 6 miles

The speed for walking: 6 ÷ 2 = 3 mph

The speed for running: 3 + 2 = 5 mph

Thus, time for running: 8 ÷ 5 = 1.6 h
