Sample Problem

Lucy took 3 hours to cover 2/3 of a journey. She covered the remaining 60 miles in 2 hours. What was the average speed for the whole journey?

  mph

Solution

The remaining 60 miles was (1 - 2/3 = 1/3) of the total journey.

Then, total distance of the journey: 60 ÷ 1/3 = 60 × 3 = 180 miles

The total time: 3 + 2 = 5 h

Recall the formula: Average Speed = Distance ÷ Time

Thus, 180 ÷ 5 = 36 mph
