Sample Problem

A bus set off from City A to City B at 13:40. For the first 156 km, it travelled at an average speed of 80 km/h. For the remaining 198 km, it travelled at an average speed of 90 km/h. At what time did the bus reach the destination? (Write in 24-hour format).

Solution

The time for the first 150 km: 156 ÷ 80 = 1.95 h

The time for the remaining 198 km: 198 ÷ 90 = 2.2 h

Then, the total time: 1.95 + 2.2 = 4.15 h = 4 h + 0.15 × 60 min = 4 h 9 min

Thus, 13: 40 + 4 h 9 min = 17:49
