Sample Problem

(1)   The volume of water in Container X is gallon (s) .

(2)   Container Z contains gallon (s) more water than Container Y.

(3)   Container Y contains gallon (s) less water than Container X.

(4)   The total volume of water in the three containers is gallon (s) .

Solution

(1)   X: 1 gal. + 1 gal. + 1 gal. = 3 gal.

(2)   Z: 1 gal. + 1 qt. + 1 qt. + 1 qt. + 1 qt. = 2 gal.

Y: 2 qt. + 2 qt. = 4 qt. = 1 gal.

Z – Y = 2 gal. – 1 gal. = 1 gal.

(3)   X – Y = 3 gal. – 1 gal. = 2 gal.

(4)   Total: 3 gal. + 2 gal. + 1 gal. = 6 gal.
