Sample Problem

A pot had 1 gallon and 3 quarts of tea. Ann poured 3 quarts and 1 pint of tea out of the pot. She then refilled the pot with 2 quarts and 1 pint of tea. How much tea is in the pot at the end?

gal. qt.

Solution

First, we must convert all amounts into pints.

1 gal. 3 qt. = 1 × 8 pt. + 3 × 2 pt. = 14 pt., which is the original amount of tea in the pot.

3 qt. 1 pt. = 3 × 2 pt. + 1 pt. = 7 pt., which is the amount of tea poured of the pot.

2 qt. 1 pt. = 2 × 2 pt. + 1 pt. = 5 pt., which is the amount of tea the pot was refilled with.

Thus, the amount of tea at the end: 14 pt. – 7 pt. + 5 pt. = 12 pt. = 1 gal. 2 qt.
