Sample Problem

Four pots are each filled with water. The first pot is filled with 7 quarts of water. The second pot is filled with 1 quart of water less than the first pot, the third pot is filled with 1 quart of water less than the second pot, and so on. Find the total amount of water in the four pots.

qt.

Solution

1st pot: 7 qt.

2nd pot: 7 qt. – 1 qt. = 6 qt.

3rd pot: 6 qt. – 1 qt. = 5 qt.

4th pot: 5 qt. – 1 qt. = 4 qt.

Thus, the total amount of water: 7 qt. + 6 qt. + 5 qt. + 4 qt. = 22 qt.
