Sample Problem

A, B, C and D are comparing their heights. B is not the tallest, but is taller than A and C. A is taller than C. Write in order from the tallest to the shortest.

Solution

In these problems, you’ll be given information about the relative ordering of people/animals/objects. You need to determine the absolute order. A method by which to do this is to choose one of the people, and compare all the others to her, which gives you a helpful reference point. This will become clearer as you work through examples.

We know that B is not the tallest, but neither are A and C, which means that D must be tallest. Also, B is second tallest. Then, A is third, since A is taller than C, so the order is D, B, A, C.
