Sample Problem

There were 168 apples in three baskets. Then, Lily transferred 5 apples from basket A to basket B, 9 apples from basket B to basket C, and 3 apples from basket C to basket A. At the end, there were the same numbers of apples in the three baskets. How many apples were there in each basket in the beginning?

Basket A: apples

Basket B: apples

Basket C: apples

Solution

Work backwards:

1) At the end, there were the same numbers of apples in the three baskets: 168 ÷ 3 = 56

Then, find out the changes of each basket:

2) Thus, in the beginning:

Basket A = 56-3 + 5 = 58

Basket B = 56-5 + 9 = 60

Basket C = 56-9 + 3 = 50
