Sample Problem

Complete the sequences below by identifying the pattern and filling in the blanks.

(1)   0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ,

(2)   1, 3, 5, 7, 9, ,

(3)   5, 9, 13, 17, ,

Solution

(1)   These are consecutive natural numbers, so the next two are 6 and 7.

(2)   This is an arithmetic sequence, which means that the difference of any two successive numbers is constant. The common difference in this sequence is 2, so we complete the pattern by adding 2 each time to get 11 and 13.

(3)   This is another arithmetic sequence with a common difference of 4. The two missing numbers are 21 and 25.
