Sample Problem

What is the area of the shaded part of the figure blow?

The area of the shaded part is cm2.

Solution

The area of the shaded part of the square is simply the area of the large square minus that of the smaller, unshaded square:

 = (8 cm × 8 cm) – (4 cm × 4 cm)

 = 64 cm2 – 16 cm2

 = 48 cm2

Similarly, the area of the shaded part of the rectangle is the area of the large rectangle minus the areas of the two smaller, unshaded figures:

 = (10 cm × 6 cm) – (2 cm × 2 cm) – (4 cm × 2 cm)

 = 60 cm2 – 4 cm2 – 8 cm2

 = 48 cm2

∴ 48 cm2 + 48 cm2 = 96 cm2

The area of the shaded part of the figure is 96 cm2.
