Sample Problem

The perimeter of a rectangle is 58 cm. Its length is 5 cm more than the width. What are the length and width?

Length: cm

Width: cm

Solution

The perimeter of the rectangle is 58 cm, so the sum of length and width is 58 ÷ 2 = 29. Since the length is 5 + width, the sum of the length and width is the same as 5 + width + width. So, 2 times the width + 5 = 29 → 2 × width = 24, → width = 24 ÷ 2 = 12 cm and the length is 12 + 5 = 17 cm.
