Sample Problem

The figure is made up of 4 6-cm by 3-cm rectangles.

What is the area of the figure? cm2.

What is the perimeter? cm.

Solution

The area is the sum of the four areas. So the area is 6 × 3 × 4 = 72 cm2. And the perimeter is the sum of the 4 perimeters of the rectangle minus 6 widths. So the perimeter is

 (6 + 3) × 2 × 4 – (6 × 3) = 54 cm.
