Sample Problem

Which of the following properties characterize ionic crystals? (Choose all that apply.)

Low melting point

High boiling point

Conductors of electricity and heat in solid state

Has lattice structure to maximize the attractive forces between positive and negative ions.

Solution

Due to the strong electrostatic forces between the ions, ionic crystals have high melting point and high boiling point. They are conductors of electricity and heat only if they are in aqueous states. Ionic solid forms crystal lattices consisting of infinite arrays of positive and negative ions in which the attractive forces between ions of opposite charge are maximized, while the repulsive forces between ions of like charge are minimized.
