Sample Problem

Solve the following linear system

x – 2y = -6

2x + 3y = 2

x = y =

Solution

We can first solve for x in the first equation, then plug it into the second one to solve for y.

x – 2y = -6

x = 2y – 6

2(2y – 6) + 3y = 2

4y – 12 + 3y = 2

7y = 14

y = 2

Now we can plug in y into either equation and solve for x.

x – 2(2) = -6

x = -2
