Sample Problem

The specific heat of nickel is 540 J/kgK. If you add 5400 J of heat to 1.0 kg of nickel, by how many Kelvins will the temperature rise?

Solution

We use the formula Q = mcΔT, and we are given that Q = 5400, m = 1.0, c = 540.

We plug all of these values into the equation and solve for ΔT.

We get that ΔT = 5400/540 = 10 K.
