Sample Problem

Write the equation of a line with slope -5/3 that passes through the point (4, -1). (give your answer in standard y=mx+b form and keep all non-integer values as reduced improper fractions)

y= x +

Solution

Use the point-slope formula: (y-y1) = m(x-x1) where (x1, y1) is a point on the line and m is the slope of the line.

(y-(-1))=(-5/3)(x-4), y+1=(-5/3)x+(20/3)

y=(-5/3)x+(17/3)
