Sample Problem

If a cannon launches a cannonball with speed 50 m/s at angle 43° to the normal (horizontal) , what is the initial horizontal velocity?

Solution

We know that the horizontal component = speed cosθ, so if we put in our givens, speed = 50, and θ = 43°

and we get vertical component = 50 (cos 43) = 37 m/s
