Sample Problem

A ferris wheel with a 180 foot diameter makes 2.5 revolutions per minute.

Find the linear speed (in feet per minute) of the ferris wheel seats.

π feet/minute

Solution

Linear speed= v = s/t

S=rθ

r=d/2=90 ft

Each revolution is 2π radians; the ferris wheel turns (2.5 revolutions/min)(2π rad/revolution)

=5π rad per minute

Linear speed = rθ/t= (90 * 5π rad) feet/1 minute=450π feet/minute
